China-Japan Friendship Hospital: International Department

The International Department of China-Japan Friendship Hospital in Chaoyang District publishes separate numbers for questions in English or Japanese and for making appointments. Its pages and the Beijing government's guide do not agree on every number, or on whether the department handles emergencies. This page sets the versions side by side.

Start with the right line

The department separates enquiry lines from appointment lines. Its Chinese and Japanese introductions describe the enquiry numbers as foreign-language (English and Japanese) service lines; the English introduction on the same page calls them the nurses' station. Either way, these are the numbers to ring with questions, and the appointment lines are for booking.

From outside China, dial +86 10 and the eight-digit number; drop the leading 0 of the Beijing code. 8420 5071 is the one appointment number that appears in every source we read, so it is the safest first call for a booking.

Other ways to book

The department's booking page says appointments can also be made through the hospital's official app, its WeChat official account, and the 114 booking platform. The Beijing government guide adds a WeChat mini program and notes that, when it was written, the app was available for iOS with an Android version in development. These channels are built mainly for patients in China. We have not tested whether any of them accepts a passport and a foreign phone number, so a phone call to the appointment line is the more predictable route from abroad.

English and Japanese

The Beijing government guide lists the department's service languages as English and Japanese. The department's introduction is published in Chinese, English and Japanese. That tells you the enquiry lines can take a call in those languages; it does not tell you that the doctor you are booked with will consult in them. If you need an interpreter in the consulting room, say so when you book and ask who provides one.

Emergencies: the sources conflict

The department's booking page lists an International Department emergency number, +86 10 8420 6498. The Beijing government guide, dated December 2023, says emergency services are "not available" for this department. A third source, the German embassy's Beijing medical list (June 2026), gives 8420 6498 as a 24-hour emergency number for the hospital, which is closer to the department's own page. Public sources alone cannot settle it. Do not plan around this department for urgent care until you have confirmed it by phone; in a life-threatening emergency in mainland China, call 120.

Insurance direct billing

The department says it works with nearly 30 insurers and agencies in China and abroad on direct billing. Its insurance page names, among others, MSH, Ping An Health, Cigna (招商信诺), Bupa, MediLink-Global, ICBC-AXA, International SOS, FESCO, Generali China, Taikang, Emergency Assistance Japan and China Health Connect (商保通). The page has no date, so the list may have changed.

A name on that list means the hospital has an arrangement with the company, not that your plan covers your visit. Ask your insurer three things: whether this department is in your network, whether outpatient care is billed directly or only admissions, and whether you need a guarantee letter before you arrive. If you are paying yourself, read our guide to paying for care in China, and see our costs page for the figures we can source.

If you are admitted

The department describes 122 single rooms, each with its own bathroom. Its published ward rules are worth reading before a planned stay, because some affect visitors from abroad directly:

  • Do not invite doctors from outside the hospital to see you, and do not take medicines you brought yourself without first agreeing it with the doctor in charge.
  • Do not leave the hospital or stay out overnight; the ward says it will treat that as self-discharge.
  • Do not keep important documents, cash or valuables in the room. Plan where your passport will be kept, since you will need it for registration and payment.
  • Do not use your own electrical appliances on the ward.

Claims we did not check

The introduction states that the department passed ISO 9001 and received a quality certificate from Bupa, and quotes awards. We did not verify these with the certifying bodies or check whether they are current, so we do not rely on them. We do not rank hospitals; read our editorial policy for why.

What to ask the International Department

Ring the enquiry line first, then the appointment line once you have answers.

  1. I will be coming from outside China. Which appointment number should I use, and can you book me before I arrive?
  2. Will the doctor consult in English or Japanese, or will an interpreter be present?
  3. Does the International Department see emergencies, or should I go to another part of the hospital?
  4. Is [insurer] on your direct-billing list for outpatient visits, admissions, or both?
  5. Which documents do you need from me before the first visit, and how should I send them?
  6. What would the first consultation and likely tests cost? Please put it in writing.

China-Japan Friendship Hospital has not reviewed this page. If you are weighing a check-up or scan rather than specialist care, the treatments page sets out what we write about; and because we never collect medical records, our privacy notice asks you to keep them out of messages to us. Before you travel, check the entry rules in our visa guide; treatment is not a stated purpose for visa-free entry. What to bring on the day is in the visit preparation guide. The Beijing guide covers the city's other pilot hospitals, and the city comparison sets Beijing against Shanghai and Shenzhen.
