Peking Union Medical College Hospital: International Medical Services

PUMCH runs a separate International Medical Services department (IMS) with its own outpatient clinic, emergency room and wards on its Dongdan campus. The hospital publishes several booking routes and more than one set of phone numbers; this page lays out what each official page says, dated, so you can ask the right line the right question.

Which part of PUMCH this page covers

PUMCH has two campuses in central Beijing. Dongdan is at 1 Shuaifuyuan, off Wangfujing in Dongcheng District; Xidan is at 41 Damucang Hutong in Xicheng District. The IMS department described here is the one on the Dongdan campus, which is the address printed on the hospital's commercial insurance brochure for IMS. The Beijing government's English medical guide (December 2023) also lists IMS services at Xidan, but says emergency care for international patients is available only at Dongdan.

IMS is not the same thing as the hospital's general outpatient service. It has its own registration, its own clinic hours and its own insurance desk. If someone in China offers to "get you a PUMCH number", check which service the appointment is for. Beijing is one of the three cities in our city comparison; the Beijing guide lists the other hospitals named in the city's international medical pilot.

Booking: the three routes the hospital publishes

A flow chart on the hospital's English site (dated 11 October 2025) gives three ways in for international patients holding a passport:

  1. The PUMCH app. It has an English interface for IMS. A friend in China can also add you as a patient in their own app ("Me - Patient Management - Add Patient") and book for you.
  2. By phone. The international patients line is +86 10 6915 6699; press 2 for English.
  3. Without an appointment. Bring your passport, register first at the cashier, and the IMS nurses' station fits you in according to that day's doctor schedule.

The third route exists, but it is not a plan for someone flying in for a specific specialist. We have not tested whether the app accepts a foreign mobile number or completes registration with a passport alone, and we did not submit any booking.

The senior expert clinic is listed under 6698 on one hospital page and 6699 on the newer brochure. Two undated Chinese IMS pages also give the international patients line as "69156698-2". We cannot tell which is current. If one number does not answer, try the English option on 6699 and ask to be transferred. The general IMS email on the department page is [email protected].

Published clinic hours

The hospital's own pages give two versions:

SessionInsurance brochure (Nov 2025)IMS foreign-patient guide (dated 8 Apr 2022)
Daytime clinic8:00 to 17:00Monday to Friday, 8:00 to 17:00
Evening clinic17:00 to 20:00Monday to Thursday, 17:00 to 19:00
Weekend clinic8:00 to 12:00Saturday and Sunday, 8:00 to 12:00

Phone booking linesNot statedMonday to Friday, 8:00 to 17:00

The evening session end time differs, and the brochure does not say which weekdays it covers. Treat these as a guide and confirm the hours for your date. If your visit is a planned check-up or scan, our treatments overview explains which kinds of care this site covers.

Emergencies

The hospital's English emergency page (October 2025) says the IMS emergency center is open 24 hours, seven days a week, covering general internal medicine, general surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatric internal medicine and plastic surgery, with 24-hour commercial insurance direct billing. That is the scope the hospital lists, not a promise that every specialist is on site at night. In a life-threatening situation anywhere in mainland China, call 120 for an ambulance.

Paying with international or commercial insurance

IMS bills insurers directly only if your insurer is on the hospital's list of partner companies. A brochure on the English site, marked "updated November 2025", shows 26 insurers and assistance companies. If yours is missing, the hospital's insurance Q&A says you pay first and claim afterwards, and suggests calling your insurer beforehand to ask which documents it needs.

  • Bring: your passport and your insurance card (the brochure asks for both on every visit). One version of the Q&A also asks for the hospital patient card.
  • Where to go: the brochure sends insured patients to the general service windows in the IMS outpatient clinic, and insurance questions to a desk on 1F of the IMS clinic. Two versions of the Q&A name different desks, so ask at reception.
  • Hospital stays: the outpatient doctor issues the admission slip, and you ask your insurer for a guarantee letter. The hospital then phones you with an admission date.
  • Costs your policy turns out not to cover: the hospital says the insurer will contact you to recover them, sometimes through a representative based at the hospital.

Direct billing is a payment arrangement, not proof of cover: check your own policy's limits and exclusions. If you are paying yourself, our payment guide covers card limits and mobile wallets, and our costs page explains why we do not quote hospital prices we cannot source.

Language

The Beijing government's English guide (December 2023) lists IMS service languages as English, Japanese, French, Korean, Russian and German. In a July 2026 news item, PUMCH says Dongdan IMS offers English-language service throughout the care process. Neither source says which language a particular doctor consults in. If you need a language other than English, ask before you book whether an interpreter will be in the room.

What to have with you

Your passport is the document the hospital asks for, both for walk-in registration and for insurance billing. Add your insurance card or guarantee letter, any referral letter or reports you were asked to send, and a written note of your appointment time and clinic. Our visit preparation guide has a fuller checklist. Send reports to the hospital, not to us: our privacy notice explains that our own form is not for medical records. China's visa-free schemes do not name hospital care among their purposes, so check the visa guide before you book flights.

Questions to put to IMS before you travel

Use these in an email to [email protected] or on the English phone option.

  1. I will be travelling from outside China. Can the IMS English app interface register me with a passport and a foreign phone number?
  2. Which line books the senior expert clinic: 6915 6698 or 6915 6699?
  3. Is my appointment at Dongdan or Xidan, and which building and floor should I go to?
  4. Will my consultation be in English, or should I arrange an interpreter for [language]?
  5. Is [insurer] on your current direct-billing list, and does it cover outpatient visits, inpatient stays or both?
  6. Can you give me a written estimate for the consultation and the tests you expect?
  7. Which documents should I send before the visit, and through which secure channel?

Nothing on this page was confirmed by PUMCH. We do not rank hospitals; our editorial policy explains why, and how we verify explains what "checked" means here. Frequently asked questions

Can I book PUMCH International Medical Services in English?

The hospital says yes: the PUMCH app has an English interface for IMS, and the international patients line (+86 10 6915 6699) has an English option on key 2. We have not tested either from outside China.

Is the PUMCH international department open at night?

The hospital lists 24-hour IMS emergency care at the Dongdan campus. Outpatient clinics run in daytime, evening and weekend-morning sessions; the hospital's own pages give different end times for the evening session.

Does PUMCH bill my insurance directly?

Only if your insurer is on the hospital's partner list (a brochure marked November 2025 shows 26 companies). Otherwise you pay and claim afterwards. Inpatient stays need a guarantee letter from your insurer.

Which PUMCH campus has the international department?

This profile covers IMS at Dongdan, 1 Shuaifuyuan, Dongcheng District. The Beijing government guide also lists IMS services at Xidan but says international emergency care is at Dongdan only.
