Peking University International Hospital: Booking from Abroad
Peking University International Hospital describes itself as a non-profit, non-governmental hospital in Zhongguancun Life Science Park, Changping District, in Beijing's northern suburbs. Its international patient team takes requests online, by email and by phone, and the hospital spells out that an appointment exists only once a formal confirmation letter is sent. This page walks through that sequence.

"Request received" is not a booking
The hospital's English appointment page describes two different messages, and the difference matters if you are buying flights around them:
| Message | When it arrives | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| "Appointment Request Received" | Immediately after you submit the online form | An automatic acknowledgement. Nothing has been scheduled. |
| Phone call or email from a coordinator | The page says within 1 to 2 business days (Monday to Friday) | The coordinator reviews your details and discusses time, specialist and instructions |
| "Appointment Confirmation Letter" | After the coordinator has arranged the visit | The only document the hospital treats as a final booking: date and time, physician's name, clinic location and arrival instructions |
The same page ends with a line saying the team aims to reply to messages within 24 hours. That is a target for a first reply, not the 1 to 2 business days of review, and neither is a promise that a particular specialist is free. Wait for the confirmation letter before you book anything non-refundable.
Three ways to send a request
- Online form. Name, contact email, department, preferred physician and a description of your request. The hospital says this is the basis for an initial assessment by its medical team.
- Email to [email protected]. The hospital suggests a subject line naming you and the target department, and asks for a description of your condition, preferred dates and contact details. It sends an acknowledgement, then a coordinator follows up.
- Phone: +86 10 6900 6999. The Beijing government's English medical guide (October 2025) gives the same number as a consultation and appointment hotline and also mentions the hospital app and WeChat service account.
Before attaching any medical documents to an email, ask the coordinator whether that address is the channel they want used for records. We never ask you to send records through this site; see our privacy notice.
Timing
The hospital recommends asking at least 3 to 5 business days ahead to improve the chance of seeing a preferred specialist, and warns that complex cases can take longer to review. Outpatient hours are listed as 08:00 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 17:00, Monday to Sunday, with holiday arrangements varying. To cancel or change, the page asks for a phone call at least 24 hours before.
Languages: two descriptions on the same site
The appointment page says email and telephone service is in Chinese and English, and that for other languages the hospital will "do our best" to arrange an interpreter if you say so when booking. A separate services page says it has certified medical interpreters, online and on site, for Mandarin, English, Japanese, Korean, Arabic and more. The Beijing government guide lists English, Korean, Japanese, Arabic and French for the international medical center. Read together, English is the language the hospital commits to for booking; for anything else, name the language in your request and ask for written confirmation that an interpreter will attend.
Paying with insurance
The hospital's payment page sets out a sequence for patients with international insurance:
- Tell the international team at booking that you are insured and send a copy of your insurance card, with policy number, group number and the insurer's contact details.
- The hospital's insurance staff contact your insurer to check what your plan covers for the planned care.
- For major treatment or surgery, your insurer will usually need to approve it beforehand. The hospital says it helps prepare the medical reports, and that without prior authorisation a claim may be rejected.
- Once your insurer issues a guarantee of payment (GOP), treatment can be scheduled. Deductibles, co-payments and anything the plan excludes are paid by you before treatment.
- After treatment, the hospital bills the insurer and gives you a final bill showing what each side paid.
The insurance partners page names Aetna as an example, saying Aetna members present their card and ID at registration and pay only non-covered charges. We could not read a full partner list from the page.
Paying yourself
Self-pay patients receive a written "Treatment Plan and Cost Estimation Form" after the first consultation. The hospital asks for the full estimated amount in advance before treatment goes ahead, then issues a final bill: any unused balance is refunded and any extra cost is charged as a difference. Payment methods listed are international wire transfer, Visa, Mastercard and American Express cards, US dollar or yuan bank drafts, and cash in yuan, with large cash payments booked ahead. The hospital also publishes a price list for premium services on the same page; we do not reproduce hospital prices here, for the reasons on our costs page. Our payment guide covers card limits for visitors.
Reaching Changping
The hospital is at 1 Life Park Road in Zhongguancun Life Science Park, Changping District, well north of central Beijing. Its location page gives directions by the Changping metro line to Life Science Park station, then onward by the bus route it describes, and by car from the G6 and G7 expressways. The international team also offers airport and railway pick-up by advance booking, and keeps a list of nearby hotels and apartments. If you stay in the city centre, plan for a long journey on appointment days. Our Beijing guide covers arrival and transport.
If it is an emergency
The hospital's introduction describes an emergency department with resuscitation rooms and intensive care beds. The Beijing government guide, however, lists emergency services as "not available" for the international medical center itself. In practice, the international team handles planned visits; in an emergency, go to an emergency department or call 120.
What to ask before you rely on a date
Send these by email so the answers are on record.
- Has my request been reviewed, and when will I receive the Appointment Confirmation Letter?
- Which physician will see me, and in what language does that physician consult?
- If I need [language], will an interpreter attend in person, and is there a charge?
- Is [insurer] billed directly here, and does my visit need prior authorisation?
- For self-pay, when will I receive the cost estimation form, and how is the advance payment made?
- Which channel should I use to send medical documents?

PKUIH has not reviewed this page. Hospitals are never ranked here, for reasons set out in our editorial policy; the checks behind each line are described under how we verify. What to carry on the day is listed in the hospital visit guide, and entry routes in the visa guide. More profiles sit on the hospital index, and the cities overview also covers Shanghai and Shenzhen. Check-ups are explained in general terms on the treatments page; our coordination fee is on the pricing page, and about us names who runs this site.
Frequently asked questions
