Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital: International Department
Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital, founded in 1941, is a large public hospital next to the Qingyang Taoist Temple in central Chengdu. Its International Medical Department is a special-needs (特需) clinic rather than a service designed around visitors from abroad, and in June 2025 it moved to another campus. The hospital publishes no foreign-language booking line, so planning a visit here takes more preparation than at hospitals with an English booking desk.

The department moved in June 2025
An announcement from the hospital's outpatient department, published by Sichuan Online on 2 June 2025, said that from 3 June the International Medical Department (special-needs clinic) would move in full from the first floor of the main outpatient building to the first floor of Building 9 (inpatient) at the Caotang campus. The notice gives the reason as a more separate setting for patients with special medical needs. It also said that patients with existing bookings would receive a text message about the new address, and that their time slots and queue numbers would not change.
That move is the single most useful fact on this page. Hotel staff, taxi drivers and older directories will usually send you to the main campus at 32 Section 2, First Ring Road West, which is the address on the hospital's English site. The international clinic is not there any more, according to the hospital's own notice.
Which entrance at Caotang
The hospital's Chinese location page lists the Caotang site as a ward area for its geriatrics and eye centres, with two entrances:
| Entrance | Address | Getting there, as listed |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicles | 62 Dashi West Road (大石西路62号), Qingyang District | Buses 111, 70 and 1075 to Baihua Xiaoqu stop, then about 200 m on foot |
| Pedestrians | 49 Huanhua Binhe Road (浣花滨河路49号) | Bus 1075 to Huanhuaxi Park stop, then about 100 m; Metro Line 17, Huanhuali station |
The same page gives a Caotang outpatient triage number, +86 28 8739 7451, on working days. It is listed for the campus as a whole, not for the international department, so treat it as a way to ask directions rather than as a booking line.
A shuttle between the two campuses
If you end up at the main campus, the June 2025 notice includes a timetable for a free hospital shuttle. Buses leave the main outpatient building at 7:45, then hourly from 9:00 to 12:00, at 13:45, and hourly from 15:00 to 17:00. From Caotang they leave the outpatient and medical technology building at 8:30, hourly from 9:00 to 12:00, at 13:45, at 15:00 and 16:00, and finally at 17:30. The notice does not say whether the timetable runs at weekends, and it is more than a year old; ask on the day before you rely on it.
Contacting the hospital
The hospital publishes three general numbers on both its Chinese and English sites. None is described as a foreign-language line.
| Number | Published purpose | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| +86 28 8739 3928 | Patient enquiries (outpatient department), working days | Asking how the international department takes bookings |
| +86 28 8739 3999 | Switchboard, "number enquiries" | Being given another extension |
| +86 28 8776 9262 | Emergency centre; the Chinese site adds that it does not answer patient enquiries | Not for booking questions |
Expect these calls to be in Mandarin. Hong Kong's Chengdu office, in a contact table that looks several years old, gives Mandarin as the only language here, and we found nothing more recent that names other languages. If you do not speak Chinese, a friend, a hotel concierge or a booking service will need to make the first call for you. The hospital's site also points patients to its WeChat account for department directions, doctor schedules and registration.
What the English site covers
The English site (en.samsph.cn) has a short registration guide written for the general clinics. It explains that on a first visit you are issued a patient card (the "JinKang Card"), for which you give an address and phone number; that each registration ticket is valid for one specialty and one day only; and that you pay at the cashier after the consultation before tests are done. It says nothing about the International Medical Department, passports, insurance or interpreters. The site's directory lists international entries for the main campus, for Caotang and for the dermatology institute, but none of them opens a page, so the directory cannot tell you which are still in use.
Booking through an insurer
MediLink-Global, a direct-billing network, lists the "International Medical Department (Caotang campus)" with the 62 Dashi West Road address and Chinese and English as languages. Its listing says appointments are required at least one working day ahead and cancellations need 24 hours' notice, and it shows an inpatient direct-billing service. The phone number on the listing, 400-880-8820, is the network's own service line, not the hospital's.
The booking template on that listing asks for the insurer, the patient's name, sex, Chinese ID number, age, phone, hospital card number (or an address on a first visit), symptoms, department, preferred doctor, date and the amount of cover. It does not say what a foreign patient should give instead of a Chinese ID number. If you hold a plan that uses this network, ask your insurer how they register a passport holder and whether the hospital needs a guarantee letter first. If you have no insurance, read the payment guide on how foreign cards and mobile wallets work, and the costs page for figures that have a traceable source.
Emergency care is separate
The international department is a clinic for planned visits. In an emergency in Chengdu, call 120. The emergency centre number above belongs to the hospital's emergency service, and the hospital says it is not for enquiries.
Questions to ask before you go
Have someone ask these in Chinese if you cannot.
- Is the International Medical Department still at Caotang, Building 9, first floor, and which gate is closest?
- How does a foreign patient book: by phone, through WeChat, or only through an insurer?
- Can I register with a passport, and what do you need instead of a Chinese ID number?
- Will the doctor or a staff member speak English, or should I bring an interpreter?
- Does [insurer] bill you directly for clinic visits, and does an admission need a guarantee letter?
- Does the shuttle between the main campus and Caotang run on my visit day?

The hospital has not confirmed this profile. For the city's airports, the transit area and the newer international alliance, see our Chengdu guide; the cities page compares Chengdu with Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen. The visa guide sets out entry rules when treatment is the reason for travel, and the hospital visit guide lists what to carry. Our verification method explains the "public sources" label, the editorial policy explains why we do not rank hospitals, and the hospital index gathers the profiles released so far. The treatments page lists the planned care we write about, pricing sets out what our own help costs, and about us says who runs the site.
