Renji Hospital, Shanghai: International Medical Service

Renji Hospital, affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, runs an International Medical Service (IMS) with desks on three campuses. The hospital publishes a step-by-step visit for insured patients that ends with a return to reception, and states plainly that IMS has no emergency service. Both points shape how you plan a visit from abroad.

Three desks, three addresses

The hospital's IMS page lists an international clinic on each of three campuses:

The hospital's international patient FAQ describes the main site differently: headquarters at 160 Pujian Road, Pudong, near Tangqiao metro station, with IMS on the first floor of Building 15, with its own entrance. These may be two entrances to the same site, but we have not confirmed it. Ask which street entrance to use when you book. The IMS page says the three campuses share resources and offer the same service; check that the doctor you need works at the campus you are booked into.

Ways to book IMS

The current FAQ gives two booking routes: phone on +86 21 6838 3408 (working days, 8:00 to 17:00) and email to [email protected]. The older "How to consult" page (April 2024) lists the three campus numbers above, the hospital's WeChat account (仁济医院国际医疗 RenjiHospital) and, for insured patients, your insurer's own app, with 6838 3408 as the consultation hotline. The top of the hospital site shows 021-5875 2345, which is the hospital's general number, not the IMS line.

According to the FAQ, after you send a request the team reviews your details, may arrange an online consultation, and a doctor issues a preliminary plan within 1 to 3 working days listing examinations, treatment and follow-up. The team then confirms time and itinerary. An earlier Q&A page says IMS works by appointment but will try to fit in patients without one, and that you can book a specialist directly or start with a general practitioner if unsure which department you need.

The insured-patient sequence, including the last step

The April 2024 page sets out what happens on the day for patients using insurance:

  1. Make an appointment.
  2. Register at reception with your insurance card and your passport or ID card. The Q&A says original cards are needed; an electronic insurance card is accepted where you have one.
  3. Fill in the claim form your insurer requires.
  4. See the doctor. If needed, staff accompany you to tests.
  5. Go back to reception with your claim form once everything is finished.

The fifth step is the one visitors tend to miss: leaving straight after the last test can leave the claim incomplete. The same page warns that direct billing does not guarantee full cover; anything your policy does not cover is billed to you after the hospital has dealt with your insurer. For an admission, the Q&A says to tell the outpatient insurance specialist when the doctor recommends it, and IMS will help request a guarantee letter from your insurer.

The insurer list on the hospital's insurance page is not readable as text, so we cannot name the companies. If you pay yourself, the FAQ lists Visa and Mastercard, Alipay and WeChat Pay, and cash in yuan. Our payment guide explains limits for visitors' cards and wallets.

No emergency service at IMS

The Q&A answers the question directly: IMS has no emergency service, and patients with symptoms such as fever, chest tightness or acute abdominal pain should seek emergency care straight away. Renji does run a hospital Emergency Department, described on a separate English page, but that is not part of the international service. For urgent care in Shanghai, call 120.

Languages and records

The FAQ says IMS provides translation in English, French, German, Japanese, Korean and other languages. It also says medical records are emailed after discharge, can be printed at the nursing station on showing your passport, or can be sent abroad by courier with the cost paid on delivery. Inpatient bills can be checked in the hospital's WeChat mini program.

Renji also appears on Shanghai's 2024 list of public hospitals piloting international medical tourism, which our Shanghai guide reproduces in full. The hospital has not confirmed anything on this page. Our editorial policy rules out rankings, and how we verify sets out the sourcing. Entry routes are in the visa guide and documents to carry in the hospital visit guide. The hospital index lists all profiles; set Shanghai against Beijing and Shenzhen using the cities overview. We publish traceable prices on the costs page, describe planned care on the treatments page, list our fee on the pricing page and explain how we handle data in our privacy notice.
