Shanghai General Hospital: International Medical Care Center

Two campuses, one center name

The hospital's English site gives two addresses: 100 Haining Road in Hongkou District for the north campus, and 650 Songjiang Road for the south campus in Songjiang, south-west of the city centre. The two are far apart, so the campus matters more here than at a single-site hospital. The IMCC page says the north inpatient unit occupies the 2nd to 4th floors of the IMCC building, and the south unit the 10th floor of the main building.

The Shanghai government's foreign-language list of hospital international departments gives the north IMCC as Building 6, Wujin Road, with the phone number 6324 0090 extension 9000. That list has no update date. We did not resolve which street entrance a patient should use at the north campus; ask when you book.

The hospital's numbers are shown as images on its IMCC page without labels for each line, so we cannot say which of each pair is the booking line.

How a first visit is organised

The IMCC page describes a two-step model: an in-house physician sees you first, then a specialist consultation is arranged, either from within the hospital or with a doctor from another Shanghai hospital. In a delegation-visit report on the hospital's English site, IMCC's deputy director calls this a GP-SP (general practitioner and specialist) model. For a patient from abroad, that means you may not see the specialist you have in mind on your first visit. If you are travelling for a particular specialist opinion, ask whether IMCC can book it directly or only after the first consultation.

The hospital calls IMCC a 24-hour service: its page lists 24-hour outpatient, emergency, inpatient and home-visit services, and in the delegation report IMCC's director describes it as Shanghai's only public hospital providing 24-hour international medical services. "24-hour" describes the center's opening, not specialist availability at any hour.

Languages

The IMCC page says its doctors speak fluent English and that about one hundred nursing staff speak English, Japanese or German. The delegation report lists Chinese, English, Russian, Japanese and French. The IMCC page carries no date and the site footer reads 2014, so treat the staff numbers as historical. Confirm the language for your appointment.

Insurance, step by step

The IMCC page shows two insurance routes as flow charts:

1. Outpatient: make an appointment, fill in your insurer's claim form, have the consultation, and confirm and sign before leaving.
2. Admission: make an appointment, the insurer issues a guarantee of payment (GOP), you are admitted and treated, you confirm and sign before leaving, and the bill goes to the insurer directly.

The delegation report names Cigna and Allianz among the insurers billed directly, and the IMCC page shows China Life and Ping An logos under "cooperative insurance companies". It is not a full list. The older IMCC page says cash, cheques and credit cards are accepted. Before relying on any of this, ask your insurer whether it has a direct-billing agreement with Shanghai General Hospital and whether it covers the campus you will attend. Health checks

IMCC also runs check-ups. Its page describes the steps as booking, reception, a consultation with a senior physician, then a tailored examination plan. It also lists check-ups for people emigrating or going abroad. No prices are published; our treatments page explains what we do and do not cover.

Why some details are uncertain

• The hospital's Chinese website (www.shgh.cn) did not respond when we tried it on 24 October 2026, so we could not cross-check the English pages against it.
• The IMCC page says the center was founded in 1993 as a joint venture facility; the delegation report traces its outpatient department to 1956 and its inpatient department to 1961. These may describe different stages; we do not give a single founding year.
• The English page lists the south campus as "650 Songjiang Road"; we have not confirmed the full Chinese street name.

Name the campus in every message, since each has its own desk.

1. Which campus and building will my appointment be in, and which entrance should I use?
2. Which of your numbers is the booking line for international patients?
3. Will I see an IMCC physician first, or can you book [specialty] directly?
4. Which language will the doctor use, and is an interpreter available for [language]?
5. Do you bill [insurer] directly for outpatient care, or only for admissions with a GOP?
6. Can you give me a written estimate before I travel?

Is Shanghai General Hospital the same as Shanghai First People's Hospital?

Yes. 上海市第一人民医院 uses "Shanghai General Hospital" as its English name. It has a north campus in Hongkou and a south campus in Songjiang.

Is the International Medical Care Center open 24 hours?

The hospital describes IMCC as a 24-hour service with outpatient, emergency and inpatient care. That is the center's opening, not a guarantee that a given specialist is available at night.

How do I book IMCC at Shanghai General Hospital?

By phone to the campus you will attend. The north IMCC page lists +86 21 6324 3852 among its numbers; the south lists +86 21 3779 8630. The hospital does not label which number is for bookings.

Does IMCC bill international insurers directly?

For some insurers. The hospital names Cigna and Allianz in a report on its English site. Admissions need a guarantee of payment from your insurer first.
