Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University: International Service

Zhongshan Hospital, affiliated with Fudan University, was founded in 1937 and is one of the public hospitals in Shanghai's 2024 international medical tourism pilot. Its own international pages could not be opened when we checked, so this profile rests on the Shanghai government's English hospital listing, which credits the city health commission. That listing is short but specific, and one detail in it needs checking before you rely on it.

Where to go: Gate 10B

The government listing gives the international service's address as Gate 10B, 111 Yixueyuan Road, Xuhui District. Large Shanghai hospitals have many gates, and the hospital's general address will not get you to the right door. Show the gate number to your driver, and confirm it when your booking is made.

The listing also gives weekday hours of 8:00 to 17:00 and Saturday hours of 8:00 to 12:00. No Sunday hours are listed, and nothing is said about public holidays, when many Chinese hospitals run reduced clinics; ask if your dates fall near one.

Booking by email is the practical route from abroad

Two contact routes are listed:

RouteAs listedWhat to watch
Email[email protected]. The listing says email reservation is available and that replies come within one working day.A reply is not the same as a confirmed slot. Ask for the date, doctor and gate in writing.
Phone400-626-0121, Monday to Friday 7:30 to 18:00400 numbers are mainland service lines and may not connect from overseas; we have not tested this one
Phone, SaturdayWritten as "8 am - 12 am"Read literally that means until midnight, which does not fit a clinic that closes at noon. It may mean "12 pm". Do not count on Saturday afternoon phone cover until the hospital confirms.

Because the phone line may not work from abroad, email is the route to try first. Keep the first message short: who you are, what care you are asking about, your preferred dates, and a question about how the hospital wants previous reports sent. Do not attach medical records until you know who will read them.

What the listing says the service covers

Under "characteristic diagnoses and treatments" the listing names personalised multidisciplinary team (MDT) consultations, outpatient chemotherapy infusion, acupuncture in traditional Chinese medicine, and remote consultation. Its short introduction names cardiovascular disease, liver cancer, and renal and pulmonary disease among the hospital's fields. A remote consultation is a possible first step for someone abroad, but the listing does not say who can request one, what records are needed or what it costs. Ask before assuming a remote review will lead to an appointment.

Languages

English, French and Japanese are the service languages given in the listing. That describes the service as a whole. It does not say which doctors consult in those languages or whether an interpreter is present for every appointment. If you need French or Japanese in particular, mention it in your first email.

Insurers listed for direct billing

The government listing names 25 companies providing direct-pay services at the hospital:

Insurers and administrators named
MSH China; Ping An Health; China Pacific Insurance; Cigna & CMB Health; Shanghai WellBe Insurance Brokers; Generali China Life; Shanghai Fosun Health Technology; Global Benefits Group; Bupa; Prosper Health; Allianz Partners; Taikang Life; China Health Connect (Shanghai); ICBC-AXA; Houghton Street Consulting; DTHealth; ERGO Assistance; Windstone Health; International SOS; PICC; Huatai Insurance Agency & Consultant Service; Prestige International; Shanghai LeAn Services; Ins Health; E-Health Now

The listing is dated October 2024, so names may have been added or removed since. A name on this list shows a company-level arrangement, nothing more about your own policy. Check with your insurer whether outpatient care is billed directly, whether an admission needs a guarantee letter, and what you pay yourself. If you are paying without insurance, read our payment guide for card and mobile wallet limits, and see the costs page for the sourced figures we publish.

Why the hospital's own site is not cited here

On 24 October 2026, both the hospital's main site and its international page returned a server error (HTTP 521) from our location and from a server in another region. That tells us nothing about the service itself, but it means we could not compare the government listing with anything the hospital publishes now. Treat every detail above as the city's listing from October 2024 until the hospital confirms it.

Emergencies

The listing covers the international outpatient service and gives no emergency arrangements for it. For urgent care in Shanghai, call 120 for an ambulance.
