Wuhan for international patients: hospitals and practicalities

Who says what about international clinics in Wuhan

No Hubei or Wuhan government list of international medical pilot or designated hospitals turned up in our search. Instead, each source below describes a service in its own words:

Sources disagree on which clinic came "first" in Wuhan, so we do not repeat that claim. A 2023 city government report describes consular officials from France, the United States, South Korea and the United Kingdom visiting Tongji's international medical department.

Our first Wuhan profile

We are starting with Zhongnan Hospital, where the gap between what is known and what a visitor needs is clearest: an international department exists, according to the insurance network that bills it, but its phone number, languages and floor are not published in any source we could read. The profile will set out those gaps. Published profiles appear here:

Two Union Hospital clinics, two addresses

Union Hospital's English page places its international outpatient department in the main campus outpatient building. The Australian consulate's list also names a Union international clinic on the 2nd floor of Union Hospital West at 58 Shenlong Avenue in Hanyang, by appointment only, and the development zone report describes a new international center at the zone branch. These may be separate clinics on different campuses. When you book, confirm the campus and building in writing.

Arriving

Wuhan Tianhe International Airport (WUH) is Hubei's only port on the 240-hour visa-free transit list (National Immigration Administration, 20 August 2026), and the permitted area is the whole of Hubei province. Visa-free transit is for travel, business, visits and family reunions with onward travel to a third country or region, not for treatment. Read the visa guide before planning a medical trip.

What embassies and consulates publish

Two foreign governments publish medical lists that cover Wuhan, each with a disclaimer that it endorses no provider:

• The UK list (updated May 2025) names Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University and Union Hospital, giving Union's international department number, 027-8572 6646, and marking English-speaking staff.
• The Australian consulate-general in Shanghai, whose district includes Hubei, lists Zhongnan Hospital at 169 Donghu Road with its main switchboard numbers, as well as Tongji, Union, Hubei Provincial People's Hospital and others. The page carries no update date.

France, the United States, South Korea and the United Kingdom have consulates-general in Wuhan, listed with addresses on the city's English portal (2021). We did not find medical lists from the French, American or Korean consulates.

Language and hotlines

We found no official source describing a foreign-language service on Wuhan's 12345 government hotline, so we do not list one. Tongji says its international service can provide full translation, and the development zone report mentions French and Japanese clinics at the Union branch; ask the clinic you choose which language your doctor uses. In an emergency, call 120.

4. Do you bill [insurer] directly, and is a guarantee letter needed?

Frequently asked questions

Does Wuhan have government-designated hospitals for foreigners?

We found no Hubei or Wuhan government list. Tongji Hospital describes itself as designated by provincial authorities, but we have not seen the government document.

Which Wuhan hospitals have international clinics?

Sources describe international clinics at Zhongnan Hospital, Union Hospital (main campus and other sites) and Tongji Hospital. Confirm the campus and hours with the hospital.

Can I stay in Wuhan on 240-hour visa-free transit?

Wuhan Tianhe airport is a transit port and the permitted area is Hubei province. The policy's purposes do not include medical treatment.

Is there English help on Wuhan's 12345 hotline?

We could not confirm this from an official source.
