Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University: International Department
Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University, on Donghu Road in Wuchang, is a public teaching hospital that traces its history to 1956. In November 2024 it opened an International Medical Department, a special-needs (特需) clinic. We could not open the hospital's own website, so this profile rests on an insurance network's notice and on foreign governments' lists, and it says plainly where the information stops.

Where this information comes from
| Source | What it gives | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| China Health Connect (商保通), an insurance direct-billing network, notice dated 29 July 2025 | Opening date, address, hours, the services offered, and how network members book | Written for that network's members; not a hospital document |
| Australian consulate-general in Shanghai, medical facilities list (undated) | Address and two switchboard numbers | General hospital numbers only |
| Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Wuhan, hospital contact list | Lists other Wuhan hospitals; Zhongnan is not on it | Not a ranking; the omission tells us nothing about quality |
| The hospital's website, znhospital.cn | Nothing: on 24 October 2026 it did not respond from our location or from a server in another region | Earlier attempts returned an error page (HTTP 412) |
A search engine shows fragments of the hospital's own international department pages, mentioning building numbers, floors and phone lines. We could not open those pages, so we do not repeat any of those details here.
What the insurance network says about the department
According to China Health Connect, the International Medical Department (special-needs clinic) of Zhongnan Hospital started running on 11 November 2024. The notice says the department draws on well-known specialists from across the hospital and offers more than 30 clinical specialties, naming internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, dentistry, ultrasound and radiology. It lists minimally invasive and interventional procedures, surgery, health check-ups, medical cosmetic treatment, sedated endoscopy and pre-pregnancy care, and says complex cases can have a multidisciplinary consultation with domestic or international experts. It gives the address as 169 Donghu Road and the hours as 8:00 to 17:00 on weekdays, and names intensive care, urology, oncology, general surgery, neurosurgery and gastroenterology among the hospital's featured departments.
The notice is promotional in tone, as the network is announcing a new provider. Treat the list of services as the scope the department describes, not as an assurance that a particular treatment will be offered to you.
"International" here means a premium clinic
Special-needs clinics (特需门诊) in Chinese public hospitals are separately run clinics, usually with senior doctors, shorter waits and higher fees, used by Chinese and foreign patients alike. Calling the clinic "international" does not by itself mean that staff speak English or that it is set up for patients arriving from abroad. Nothing we could read says which languages the department uses.
If you are insured through China Health Connect
The network's notice gives a clear rule: members can be seen with their card and billed directly, but must book in advance through the phone number printed on their insurance card. It adds that the hospitals included depend on each insurer's product handbook. So:
- Check that your plan uses China Health Connect and that Zhongnan Hospital is in your product's list.
- Call the number on your card, not the hospital, to book.
- Ask the network what you will pay yourself, and whether an admission would need a separate guarantee.
The network's own customer line is not a hospital booking line, and the notice does not say whether visitors with overseas policies can use it.
If you are paying yourself
We found no direct booking route for the international department. The Australian consulate's list gives the hospital's switchboard numbers, +86 27 6781 2888 and +86 27 6781 2999. Someone who speaks Mandarin could ask the switchboard to be put through to the International Medical Department (国际医疗部特需门诊) and ask how a foreign patient books. We could not confirm an English service on Wuhan's 12345 government line, so plan for a Chinese speaker to make the call. For paying as a visitor, see our payment guide; for the price data we hold, the costs page.
Other Wuhan clinics with English sources
If you need a clinic that publishes its arrangements in English, two other Wuhan hospitals do: Union Hospital's international outpatient department and Tongji Hospital's International Medical Services. Our Wuhan guide sets out what each says, including Union Hospital's several sites. We have not profiled those hospitals yet, and listing them is not a recommendation.
Getting to Wuhan
Wuhan Tianhe airport is a 240-hour visa-free transit port, but visa-free transit does not list medical treatment among its purposes. Check entry options in the visa guide first, and the hospital visit guide for what to bring.
In an emergency
The department is described as a weekday clinic. For emergencies in Wuhan, call 120.
Questions for the switchboard or your insurer
These need to be asked in Chinese if you call the hospital directly.
- Is the International Medical Department (特需门诊) at 169 Donghu Road, and in which building and on which floor?
- Can a foreign patient book it directly, without an insurer, and how?
- Can I register with a passport?
- Does any doctor in the department consult in English?
- For insured patients: is my plan billed directly, and do I need to book through my insurer's number?
- What will the consultation cost, compared with a general clinic?

Zhongnan Hospital has not confirmed this profile, and we will update it if we can read the hospital's own pages. Compare Wuhan with Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and other cities on the cities page; the hospital index lists every profile we publish. The labels used here are explained under how we verify, and our editorial policy sets out why profiles carry no rankings or outcome claims. The treatments page, pricing, about us and the privacy notice cover the rest of the site.
