Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, Guangzhou: International Eye Care

Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center (ZOC) is the eye hospital of Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, run as a public institution, and one of the hospitals in Guangdong's 2026 international medical service pilot. Its International Eye Care service publishes two mobile numbers and an email address for one-to-one booking. This page covers how to reach it and what to settle before you travel for an eye appointment.

Who the service is for

ZOC's International Eye Care page, in Chinese and English, describes a dedicated service for residents of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, for foreign nationals, for clients with commercial health insurance and for "certain domestic residents". It says the service covers all eye subspecialties and works as a one-stop, multidisciplinary system. The page also mentions experience in international medical aid and in cooperation within the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area.

That is a description of scope, not a promise about any particular treatment. An eye hospital that covers all subspecialties still has to examine you before deciding what, if anything, to do. Plan the trip around an assessment first.

Booking by mobile or email

Bookings are made one to one, by phone or by email:

The two contact numbers are mobile phones, so they can also be reached by text message, and possibly by messaging apps, although the page does not say so. The hours are given in GMT+8, which is useful when dialling from abroad: the morning session is the middle of the night in North America and the early hours in Europe. Email is the easier first step for most people abroad.

The page also carries two introductory videos, one in Chinese and one in English. We did not review the videos, so nothing on this page is drawn from them.

Quzhuang or Zhujiang New Town

The site footer lists two addresses: the Quzhuang campus (区庄院区) at 54 Xianlie South Road in Yuexiu District, and the Zhujiang New Town campus (珠江新城院区) at 7 Jinsui Road in Tianhe District. The International Eye Care page does not say which campus it uses, or whether it uses both. The two are in different districts. When your appointment is confirmed, ask which campus, and keep the address in Chinese for the driver.

The pilot, and what it means for fees

In March 2026 Guangdong's health, medical security and drug authorities named ZOC among 25 hospitals in a provincial pilot for international medical services. Press reports of the announcement quote the provincial health commission: patients of these services pay themselves or through international commercial insurance, basic medical insurance does not apply, hospitals may set their own prices, and the services must run in separate areas with their own beds and staff.

In practice that means the fee for an international consultation or procedure may differ from what a local patient pays in the general clinics, and we have found no published price list for ZOC's international service. Ask for a written estimate covering the examination, any tests and any procedure. Our costs page explains how we treat price figures, and the payment guide covers paying as a visitor.

Insured patients

The service names commercially insured clients as one of its groups, but the page lists no insurers and does not mention direct billing or guarantee letters. If you plan to use insurance, ask your insurer first whether it has an arrangement with ZOC, and ask ZOC what documents it needs from the insurer before the visit.

Planning an eye appointment from abroad

  • Expect an assessment first. The service does not publish surgery dates or packages. Whether a procedure is suitable, and when, is decided after an examination.
  • Allow for follow-up. Many eye procedures need checks in the days or weeks afterwards. Ask how many visits the doctor expects and whether follow-up can be done in your home country.
  • Bring your history. Recent prescriptions, previous scans and reports, and a list of eye drops or medicines help the first consultation.
  • Ask about the report language. If your own doctor will continue your care, you will want results and a summary in English.

Language help in Guangzhou

The page is bilingual but does not say which languages the doctors speak. If you need help on a call, Guangzhou's government runs a multilingual public service line, 960169, with English interpretation around the clock, which can join a three-way call. Our Guangzhou guide explains how it works.

Urgent eye problems

The International Eye Care page describes booked appointments only and lists no emergency arrangement. For a sudden loss of vision, an eye injury or chemical exposure, call 120 or go to an emergency department; do not wait for the booking line to open.
