First Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University: Intl Center
Zhejiang University School of Medicine's First Affiliated Hospital (FAHZU) is a large public teaching hospital in Hangzhou. Foreign patients can go two ways: through its International Healthcare Center at the Yuhang campus, or through the hospital's general outpatient booking. The two routes have different phone lines, different notice periods and, the hospital implies, different rates.

Two routes into the same hospital
| International Healthcare Center | General outpatient booking | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | Building 1, Yuhang campus (Headquarters Phase I) | Depends on the department and campus |
| Phone | +86 571 8723 4455 | +86 571 8723 6309 |
| Hours given | Weekdays 8:00–12:00 and 13:30–17:00 (the request form says 8:00–17:00) | Weekdays 8:00–17:00 |
| [email protected] | [email protected] (outpatient department) | |
| Notice | At least one day before the visit | The page says appointments "should be made 7 days prior" |
| Other channels | Online request form | Alipay and WeChat |
Both email addresses are on public mail services, not the hospital's domain, but each appears on the hospital's own English pages. The general appointments page itself links to the International Healthcare Center for foreign patients, so the center is the route the hospital expects visitors to use.
The rates hint
The center's request form ends with an instruction that is worth reading closely. If your insurer is not on the list "and you do not agree to the rates at the International Healthcare Center", it says, call the general outpatient line instead. In other words, the center charges its own rates, which may differ from those in general clinics. The page does not publish those rates. Ask for an estimate in writing before your visit. If an insurer is paying, also ask whether it covers the center's rates in full or only up to a limit, and whether anything is left for you to settle on the day. Then decide which route suits you; the general route will need more independence, since its booking runs through Chinese apps.
Requesting a visit online
The center's online form asks for title, first and last name, date of birth, sex, country, passport number, appointment date and time, phone, email and the current medical problem, all marked as required. "Address in China" appears without the required marker, so a visitor without a Chinese address should not be blocked. Time slots offered are 8:00 to 11:00 and 14:00 to 16:00. The hospital says a representative will contact you by phone or email within 24 hours on working days, which means a request sent on Friday evening China time may not be answered until Monday.
The center describes a team of English-speaking doctors and nurses and a guide who leads patients to the appropriate specialist. It does not say which specialties have English-speaking doctors on which days, so name the specialty and your language in the "current medical problem" box.
The form has no way to attach files. Say in the problem box that you have reports and scans ready, and ask the center where to send them. Its department list also names an emergency department at a Zhijiang campus and a Liangzhu clinic, a reminder that FAHZU runs several sites under one name; the international center itself is the one at Yuhang.
Yuhang is not the old city campus
The center is at the Yuhang campus, which the hospital calls Headquarters Phase I, in the north-west of Hangzhou. The hospital mentions "two new campuses", and its name in Chinese is often shortened to 浙大一院, which drivers may associate with the older site near the city centre. Give your driver the campus name and "Building 1" in Chinese, or show the address from your confirmation.
Insurance: two different lists
The center's page lists about 25 direct-billing partners, including MSH China, Cigna & CMB, ERGO, MediLink-Global, AIA, Ping An, PICC, Generali China, International SOS, Allianz Partners, Taikang and Fosun Health. The insurer drop-down on the request form has a different set of 20 names plus "others", adding ERV China, Global Benefits Group, Bupa, Star Ehealth and Taikang Pension, and leaving out some on the page list such as AIA and PICC. Neither list is dated.
If your insurer appears on only one of the lists, ask the center which is current. If you have no insurance, or your insurer is not listed, the hospital accepts international debit and credit cards on UnionPay, Visa or Mastercard. Our guide to paying for care covers what to carry in case a card is declined.
If you use the general route
The general appointments page lists Alipay and WeChat as booking channels, alongside its phone line and the outpatient department's email. Booking a hospital through either app in China can require a verified account, which many short-term visitors do not have, so phone or email is the realistic choice for most people from abroad. The same page asks for seven days' notice for ordinary appointments, which leaves little room on a short trip.
When it cannot wait
Both pages say to call 120 for a medical emergency. The center's form is for non-urgent appointments and is answered on working days only.
