Second Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University (SAHZU)
The Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine (SAHZU) is a public teaching hospital whose main campus is on Jiefang Road in central Hangzhou. It offers foreign patients a choice: the International Medicine Department (IMD), booked through the department, or the hospital's ordinary clinics, booked through an app after registering in person. The English pages explain both in detail, and they disagree on a few points.

The International Medicine Department or a general clinic
SAHZU's English site has two separate guides, and the choice between them shapes the whole visit.
| International Medicine Department | General clinics | |
|---|---|---|
| How to book | Phone, online form or the department's WeChat; the department contacts you to confirm | Alipay mini-program "SAHZU Good Doctor", self-service kiosks or service windows |
| Before booking | No prior registration mentioned | You must first register in person at a service window and get a SAHZU medical record |
| Notice | At least 1 day (one page) or 3 days (the form page) | Slots open 7 days ahead, from 15:00 |
| Payment | Direct billing for listed insurers; cards accepted | The guide says patients "will be asked to pay out of pocket" |
| Who can use it | Not for patients under 14, according to the general guide's list of unavailable services | Many departments also exclude under-14s |
For someone still abroad, the IMD is the only route that can be arranged before arrival, because a general clinic booking needs a medical record that is created at the hospital.
Contradictions in the IMD's own pages
- Notice period. The "Schedule your visit" guide says appointments should be made at least 1 day ahead. The online form page says at least 3 days. Allow three days, or more for anything other than a simple consultation.
- Email. The guide gives [email protected]; the site footer gives [email protected]. Both are on the university's domain. Write to the first for appointments and copy the second if you get no answer.
- Campus. The form books "the International Medicine Department in our Binjiang Campus" (1511 Jianghong Road, south of the Qiantang River), while the footer and many directories give the main campus at 88 Jiefang Road. Go to Binjiang unless your confirmation says otherwise.
The phone line, +86 571 8971 3988, is the same on every page, staffed Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 17:00.
The form asks for a Chinese address
The IMD form marks patient name, sex, birthday, nationality, passport number, permanent address in China, mobile number (placed under "Contact Number (in China)"), email, requested date and department as required. A visitor will often have no permanent address in China and no Chinese mobile number. Do not invent either. Phone or email the department first and ask how an overseas patient should complete the form; a hotel address, if you have booked one, may be what they want, but let them say so.
If you choose a general clinic
The general guide is detailed, and strict. After registering in person with the name and number on your passport, you can hold no more than two appointments at a time. If you have not paid online, you must confirm the appointment at a window or kiosk between 16:30 the day before and 16:30 on the day. Cancel twice within 24 hours and you are barred from booking for 7 days; miss an appointment and the same 7-day bar applies. These rules apply to the patient and to whoever made the booking in the app. Unless you read Chinese and can use Alipay, the IMD will be simpler.
Who pays, and how
The IMD's insurance page says direct billing is available in the department with the companies shown, and that the list is updated often. The list is an image headed with an update date of 9 December 2024 and shows about 30 company logos, among them AIA, Allianz, Blue Pass, China Health Connect, Cigna & CMB, CPIC, Euro-Center, Fosun Health, Generali China, Global Doctors, ICBC-AXA, International SOS, MediLink-Global, MSH China, PICC, Ping An Health, Prosper, Taikang and WellBe. Without a listed insurer, the hospital accepts international UnionPay, Visa and Mastercard cards. See the payment guide for backup options.
English and other languages
The hospital says "most doctors at SAHZU speak English" and recommends booking ahead so it can arrange an English-speaking senior specialist; volunteers help with other widely used languages. That is the hospital's own description, not a guarantee for every clinic. When you request an appointment, name the specialty and say that you need English; the hospital links its ability to arrange this to advance notice.
Accreditation and remote consultation
The site carries a JCI badge. Our earlier research found that the badge relates to a past accreditation period; we have not confirmed current status with Joint Commission International, so we do not rely on it. The site's menu also mentions a teleconsultation and referral programme with UCLA, which we did not examine.

SAHZU has not confirmed this profile. The Children's Hospital of Zhejiang University also has its international clinic at Binjiang and is the place to ask about patients under 14. Our Hangzhou guide covers the airport and the government hotline's English service, and the cities page sets Hangzhou beside Shanghai, Beijing and others. The hospital index holds the full set of profiles. Read the visa guide for entry, the visit guide for documents, how we verify for our labels and the editorial policy on rankings; published price figures are on the costs page, our own fee is on the pricing page, the treatments page lists care types, and about us introduces the team.
