Affiliated Hospital of Hangzhou Normal University: Foreign Patients

What the two flowcharts show

The "Visit guide" page contains two images, uploaded in September 2021, rather than text. Read together, they describe a visit like this:

1. Arrival and guidance. A foreign patient is met at the General Service Center. Help comes, in order, from on-site volunteers using the Youdao translation app, then from staff with English skills or international student volunteers for less common languages.
2. Registration. You register, top up your patient account and get a queue number at self-service machines, found on every floor, with staff from a one-stop service center guiding you. Patients with an appointment register with a medical card, health code or insurance code.
3. Waiting. You wait in the international medical area on the 6th floor of the Outpatient Department, Building 2, until a nurse calls you. First-time patients aged 35 or over are asked to have their blood pressure measured before seeing the doctor.
4. Paying. Bills can be settled at a self-service machine, in the doctor's office, or at a foreign patient service window ("service 1") on the ground floor.
5. Tests and medicines. The chart gives locations: ultrasound on 2F of Building 2, radiation and CT on 3F of Building 1, MRI on 1F of Building 7, endoscopy on 3F of Building 7, blood collection at the north-west of 1F in Building 2, and the Western medicine pharmacy at the south of 1F in Building 2.
6. Admission. If you are admitted, formalities are at the inpatient window on 1F of Building 1, with the admission notice.

The charts are five years old. Floors and windows may have changed since, but they are the most detailed account of a foreign patient's day that the hospital publishes.

Booking: the same form problem as other Hangzhou hospitals

As at Hangzhou First People's Hospital, the English booking form wants three days' warning and promises a reply from the International Medicine Department. Its compulsory fields include a passport number, a mobile number filed under "Contact Number (in China)", an email address and a permanent address in China. Wording and layout are almost identical to those at Hangzhou First People's Hospital, which suggests both use the same website template; the hospitals' services are not the same for that reason.

If you have no Chinese address or number, contact the hospital first. The service hotline is +86 571 8801 5050, with no hours stated, and the contact page lists the email address [email protected], without saying which office reads it.

Only two insurers listed, and a copied sentence

The "Medical Insurance Partners" page names two companies: Ping An Health (95511, option 7, 24 hours) and CPIC Allianz Health (10108686, 24 hours). Its introduction tells patients to bring their policy card "to any appointment at SRRSH", the abbreviation of Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, a different hospital. The text appears to have been copied from another site and not fully edited. That does not mean the two insurers are wrong, but it is a reason to confirm with your insurer. Rules for inpatients

The English "Notice to inpatients" is longer than most. It asks patients to prepay hospital charges, sends a daily bill by text message to the number you provide, forbids leaving the hospital or staying out overnight without permission, and forbids seeing doctors outside the hospital or taking medicines you brought without the physician's permission. Valuables, passports and phones are your own responsibility. Religious service requests can be made through the hospital office on 0571-8830 3506. The notice also says staff may not accept money or "red packets" from patients.

Two campuses

The hospital's overview describes a Hangzhou main hospital and a Deqing branch in neighbouring Huzhou. The international medical area in the flowchart is at the Hangzhou site, 126 Wenzhou Road. Make sure your booking is for Hangzhou unless you intend to go to Deqing.

For an emergency

The appointment page says the service is not for emergencies and that you should call 120. The flowcharts cover outpatients only and do not show an emergency route.
